Here's the RuneScape Wiki article about the clan chat, if you'd like to read it: http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Clan_Chat

How to get into a clan chat:

If you aren't a registered member of a clan, you can still join a clan chat if the clan has allowed guests to enter. Select the clan chat tab, and click on the Visited Clan Chat option:

Select 'Join another clan's clanchat.'

After doing so, "Please enter the name of the clan to chat in" will appear in your chat area. The name of the last entered clan chat will appear as well, if you are still in the session in which you visited this chat (for example if you afk/time out and remain in the RuneScape lobby, the clan's name will appear there).

To send a message to this visited clan chat, there are several options:
  • Precede what you would like to say with '///'
    Image

  • Right click your name in the chat area, and select the chat you'd like to communicate with
    Image

  • Type '/g ' in the chat box

Right-clicking 'Guest Chat' or typing '/g ' will "lock" your chat into the Guest Chat mode, allowing you to type many lines without having to specify the chat mode each time. It will be set here until you leave the mode or enter another chat mode. Left-clicking the chat mode that appears in the chat box will clear the chat mode, setting it to the default, which is Public chat. Hitting the Esc button on your keyboard will also set your chat mode back to default/Public.

You can leave the visited clan chat by clicking on the 'Leave another clan's clanchat' button

Unlike the Friends Chat and registered clan chat, visited clan chats do not 'carry over' to other login sessions. So anytime that you leave the game, you leave the visited clan chat and must re-enter it when you next return to the game. You cannot visit another clan's clan chat when in the Lobby.

Joining a clan chat as a registered clan member:

To be a registered member of a clan, you must be invited by a clan member that has the 'recruit' power. This must be done in-game, as the recruiter must select the recruit button and then click on the invitee.

After accepting the invitation, you will enter your clan's clan chat automatically upon logging in. With the RuneScape Lobby feature, you may also read and chat with the clan chat without logging in to the game itself. Switching between Lobby and Game does clear all chat histories, though.

When inside your clan chat, you may take the following steps to write a message to fellow chat occupants:

  • Precede your line with '//'

  • Right click your name in the chat area and select 'Clan Chat'
    Image

  • Type '/c' into the chat box
    Image

  • Left-click 'Clan' below the chat box

As with the guest chat, Right-click selecting 'Clan Chat' and typing '/c' will set your chat mode to Clan Chat, until you leave it or set it to another mode. Left-clicking the chat mode that appears in the chat box will clear the chat mode, setting it to the default, which is Public chat. Hitting the Esc button on your keyboard will also set your chat mode back to default/Public.

Left-clicking 'Clan' below the chat box will show only text from your clan chat, as well as setting your chat mode. You can Right-click 'Clan' to see other filter options.

When in clan chat mode, the chat box will appear like this:

If you have the desire to leave the clan chat, clicking 'Leave your clan's chat channel' will allow you to do so without having to leave from the clan system entirely. While this setting will persist between login sessions, the feature is not available while in the RuneScape Lobby. This means that any time you are in the Lobby, you will appear to other players in the clan chat.

When you want to return, click the 'Join your clan chat channel' button.

If you decide to leave the clan system entirely, click the 'Leave your clan completely' button. As it says, you will need to be re-invited to join again.

Other chat features:

You can easily reply to your last received Private Message (PM) by hitting 'Tab' on your keyboard.

Similar to the above chats, you can send a message to the Friends chat you are in by preceding your line with '/', right-clicking to enter the mode from the chat area, or typing '/f' into the chat box. Clicking on 'Friends' below the chat box will show only the friends chat, as well as setting your chat mode. Right-click 'Friends' to see other filter options.

You can edit the color of all of the different chats to make them easily distinguishable from each other. You can find this in the Options tab:
